Level 1: Introduction to Silver Jewellery Making
Designed for the absolute beginner, this introductory course teaches you basic silver jewellery making skills and techniques, such as sawing, filing, soldering, forming and roller printing to achieve various textures and finishes. Students will design and make their own jewellery pieces, beginning with a simple silver ring, with the option of making a brooch, pendants or earrings for subsequent projects.
No prior experience required. All necessary tools and materials are supplied; students may choose to purchase additional silver if desired.

Introduction to Wax-cast Jewellery
In this six-week introductory course, participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of wax-cast jewellery making - a process in which wax is manipulated into a form from which a mould is created to cast a finished piece in metal. This course will cover working with various types of wax with different properties using a range of construction and decorative techniques to achieve different forms and finishes.
This class is suitable for complete beginners. All wax, tools and moulding materials are supplied as part of the workshop, however outsourced casting and silver costs are charged per item based on weight.

Silver Ring Workshop
In this one-day workshop, students will create and take home a sterling silver ring to their own measurements (or create a piece to a specific ring size to gift to a friend) and have the opportunity to customise their creation with their chosen texture and surfacing.
Participants will be guided through silver jewellery techniques including sawing, shaping, forming secure joins through soldering, and learn how to create different surface textures and complete other finishing techniques such as oxidizing, sanding and polishing.
This class is suitable for complete beginners. All required materials are provided including a length of sterling silver wire to create your ring and a copper sheet to develop designs and practice different finishes.

Torch-fired Enamel Jewellery
Learn how to make coloured enamel jewellery in this weekend-long course suitable for beginners. Students will be introduced to the process of designing and fabricating pendants and earrings in a colour, pattern and shape of their own design; with the option to create two pendants, or one pendant and a pair of drop earrings.
This class will cover basic jewellery making techniques such as sawing, filing, sanding, doming and polishing sheet metal, as well as provide an introduction to enamelling processes including preparing copper for enamelling, testing colours, sifting and torch-firing enamels.
This class is suitable for complete beginners. All required tools and materials are supplied to complete two projects, including materials for practicing techniques and testing colours, copper, a selection of enamel colours to choose from and sterling silver earring hooks and pendant jump-rings for attachment. (Please note chains/necklaces are not provided for pendants.)

Introduction to
Wheel Throwing
Designed for complete beginners, this course will introduce you to the skills and techniques required to throw clay on a potter’s wheel. Participants will be guided through various stages of the wheel-throwing process from centering and shaping clay on the wheel, trimming and glazing.
All required materials are supplied including clay, shaping tools and a variety of glazes to select from; students can expect to take home 8-9 finished pieces in a range of cylindrical forms such as cups, bowls, small planters and vessels. Suitable for beginners and participants who are familiar with wheel work but would like to further develop their skills.

Intermediate
Wheel Throwing
Designed for practiced throwers who would like to further develop their skills; this course will expand your throwing repertoire with new techniques and forms such as throwing bowls and plates with a larger base, adding handles, creating matching sets and lidded vessels.
Please note that students must have completed at least 2 terms of beginner’s wheel-throwing classes and have confirmed with their teacher that this is the appropriate class for them. Participants must be comfortable and consistent with centering, opening up, pulling sides and trimming, and able to throw cylindrical forms of different proportions with intention.
All required materials are supplied including clay, shaping tools and a variety of glazes to select from; students can expect to take home 8-9 finished pieces in a range of forms such as mugs with handles, bowls, plates and lidded vessels.

Introduction to Hand Building
and Surface Decoration
This course will introduce you to a range of construction and surface decoration techniques in hand built ceramics. Students will learn coiling, pinching and various slab construction methods before being guided through surface treatment techniques to apply texture and decorative elements to their pieces, and then glaze all finished work.
All required materials are supplied including clay, shaping tools, plaster moulds and a variety of glazes to select from; students can expect to take home 8-9 finished pieces in a range of sculptural and practical forms such as mugs, jugs, vases and flat slab-ware pieces such as plates or trays. Suitable for beginners and participants who are familiar with hand building techniques but would like to further develop their skills.

Mug Making Workshop
Create your own matching set of ceramic mugs in this weekend-long course, suitable for complete beginners as well as participants with prior experience in ceramics who would like to refine their skills in constructing pulled handles.
Participants will spend the first day forming their mug bodies to their desired size and proportions using hand-built ceramic methods, before crafting and attaching pulled handles, refining and adding any decorative elements to their mugs in the second session. Finished work will be glazed and fired by JamFactory after the workshop date; students will have the opportunity to select their preferred glaze colour from a small range of provided options.
This workshop is suitable for complete beginners and all tools and materials are supplied. Students can expect to complete a set of between 4-6 mugs, depending on the size and complexity of their pieces. All work will be glazed and fired in JamFactory's Ceramics Studio, to be collected 2-3 weeks after the workshop date.

Build Your Own Dinnerware
Hand build your own 12-piece dinner set (4 plates, 4 side plates and 4 pasta bowls) in this two-session weekend course. Participants will learn the process of building ceramic pieces with slump moulds; using a rolled-out clay slab which is draped and formed over a plaster mould to create pieces of consistent size and shape which can then be individualised through surface texture.
This workshop is suitable for complete beginners. All materials are supplied; your finished pieces will be glazed and fired in JamFactory's Ceramics Studio, to be collected 2-3 weeks after the workshop date.

Decorative Underglaze with Golshad Asami
Learn the basics of mixing and applying coloured underglaze decoration to earthenware pottery in this workshop led by JamFactory Ceramics Production Manager Golshad Asami. In this two-day workshop set over two weeks, participants will learn about underglaze composition, how to create their own colour palette and apply underglaze to greenware pottery with brushes and other tools and decorative techniques such as sgraffito to paint their own set of two small plates.
This workshop is suitable for complete beginners. All tools and materials are supplied, including a selection of underglaze colours, prepared test tiles and two small plates. Students may wish to bring a notebook and pencil to take notes and sketch ideas. Finished pieces will be glazed and fired in JamFactory's Ceramics Studio, to be collected 2-3 weeks after workshop concludes.

Clay as Canvas with Stephen Bird
In this weekend-long workshop led by visiting artist Stephen Bird, participants will explore the potential of creating unique slab-built forms and experiment with a variety of illustrative surface treatments.
On day one, students will be guided through the process of making durable clay slabs and how to transform them into simple, elegant forms. Participants will make a variety of slab-based pieces such as plates, platters, vessels, tiles and unique moulds.
On the second day, Stephen will reveal the secrets of clay slip: how to make it, colour it, and paint with it. Students will explore a variety of drawing and painting techniques using liquid clay slips, stains, metal oxides and raw glaze. All pieces will be fired and finished in a clear glaze by JamFactory's Ceramics Studio, to be collected 2-3 weeks after the workshop date.
This workshop is suitable for complete beginners. All tools and materials are supplied; you may wish to bring some reference images to work from if desired.

Art Kintsugi with Yoko Kawada
In this workshop led by visiting artist and multi-disciplinary designer-maker Yoko Kawada, participants will learn about the philosophy, origins and history of traditional Kintsugi before being guided through the introductory technique of the Art Kintsugi method, following 7 essential steps using modern accessible materials (such as epoxy and gold metal) to gain an understanding of the repair process and create an original piece of Kintsugi art to take home.
This workshop is suitable for complete beginners. All required tools and materials will be supplied, including a piece of broken ceramic to repair (due to time considerations, students will not be repairing their own items in the workshop, however Yoko does offer consultations by appointment for the repair of specific items).
Students will complete the workshop with their own piece of Kintsugi ceramic art to take home, and the skills required to continue to repair pieces themselves.

Furniture Short Courses
Cheese and Charcuterie Board
Create your own wooden cutting board or serving platter in this single-session introduction-level workshop. Students will have the opportunity to carve a piece to their desired shape, and customise the colour and design through the combination of different timbers.
Students will leave the workshop with their own bespoke timber food platter, carved to the shape of their choice; and an introduction to basic woodworking techniques such as cutting and gluing wood, shaping timber using a hand plane, sanding and polishing.
All tools and materials supplied including selection of timber types/colours to choose from in order to make a small-medium sized platter. This workshop is suitable for complete beginners.

Sashimono Bench Seat
Create and take home a small Japanese-style bench with a split top seat, crafted purely from solid Tasmanian Oak using hand-formed joinery. Suitable for complete beginners, this three-week course will introduce participants to traditional hand tools and techniques with a particular focus on the strength of traditional wedged mortise and tenon joinery for sturdy construction without the use of screws, nails or glue.
Over the course of three full-day sessions, students will learn how to accurately mark out joinery with a range of layout tools including bevel gauges, marking gauges, squares and marking knives. They will then be guided through cutting joinery and shaping wood by hand with chisels, Japanese saws, hand planes and spokeshaves.
All tools and materials supplied. This workshop is suitable for beginners and intermediate woodworkers who would like to refine their skills in hand-joinery. Perfect for students seeking to develop their skills in hand-tools with very little use of power tools; please note that due to the nature of this making process, some patience and elbow-grease will be required.

Wedged Tenon Step Stool
Create and take home your own solid timber step stool in this fun and intensive single-day workshop held in JamFactory's Furniture Studio. Pieces will be constructed with wedged tenons (a visible form of joinery that creates an exposed end-grain in the stool-top) for a sturdy and unique piece.
Students will be guided through the process of marking out their wooden components, how to shape and prepare their pieces with a combination of hand tools and machinery (including hand planes, drills, saws and table routers) in order to create precise and sturdy joinery with wedged tenons, as well as sand, polish and oil their finished pieces for a smooth finish.
All tools and materials supplied. This workshop is suitable for complete beginners.

Glass Short Courses
Individual Glass Blowing
Experience an intensive one-on-one introductory session in the JamFactory's hot glass studio. Under the tutelage of a professional glass artist, participants will be guided through traditional glass blowing skills in gathering, rolling, blowing, shaping with hand tools and removing pieces from the blow pipe. This session is suitable for complete beginners and all required tools and materials are supplied.
Final pieces will be annealed and refined via cold-work processes and available for collection 1-2 weeks after the workshop date (students will be contacted once their pieces are ready to collect). Postage can be arranged at an additional cost.

Tints, Stripes and Dots: Masterclass with Ben Cobb
Led by visiting artist Ben Cobb, this 5-day glassblowing masterclass will focus on including various methods for colour application and problem-solving within different processes from double overlays, to blow-throughs, stuffing cups and making cane. Suitable for participants with prior glassblowing experience, students will sharpen their skills and learn how to troubleshoot issues throughout the design and making process.
Participants will need their own hand tools (a small selection will be available for use) and colour. Colour will also be available for purchase on the day.
This 5-day intensive includes access to the hot-shop throughout the day; class time: 8am-4.30pm (with lunch break), and additional blowing time available from 5-9pm each day.

Seppeltsfield Program
Linocut Printmaking with Hanah Williams
Learn how to design, carve and print your own lino block patterns and illustrations onto paper and fabric in this hands-on workshop led by highly-qualified printmaking artist and educator Hanah Williams.
Participants will be guided through the process of sketching and preparing their designs, carving their composition out of an Ezy Carve block using a range of techniques, and how to print by hand onto both paper and fabric.
All printmaking tools and materials will be supplied; participants are encouraged to bring any reference images or items for inspiration and clothing or textile items to print onto. Students will take home a collection of finished prints, carved lino blocks, their own set of carving tools and the skills required to continue printing at home.
This age-inclusive workshop is suitable for participants aged 12+ and is designed for complete beginners, no prior printmaking experience required.

Wooden Spoon Making with Anna Lane
Join Anna Lane of Sawdust Lane Woodworks to create your own functional wooden serving spoon. Starting with a spoon blank, participants will customise their pieces to a form of their choosing and add their own unique design elements; Anna will guide you through the process of marking out and shaping your spoon with a variety of rasps and files, before sanding and oiling your spoon for a smooth and food-safe surface.
There will be a range of spoon blanks in various shapes/dimensions and different timbers such as Mahogany, Tasmanian Huon Pine and Queensland Kauri to select from on the day; choose the piece that speaks to you!

Organic Ring Making with Silver Clay
Explore the unique properties of 999 silver clay and vibrant, heat-resistant stones in this immersive ring-making workshop led by multidisciplinary artist Shirley Wu. Designed for complete beginners, this hands-on session will guide you through the process of shaping, texturing and refining silver clay to create your own ring, hand-set with a selection of provided stones such as cubic zirconia, synthetic ruby and spinel.
Once your ring is dried and sanded, it will be kiln-fired on-site for approximately one hour, during which you can enjoy a break (tea and snacks will be available; you may wish to browse JamFactory's shop and gallery or explore Seppeltsfield Estate) before returning to brush and polish your piece. Witness the remarkable transformation from clay into fine silver, ready to wear.

CPD: Introduction to Metal Fabrication
Gain practical skills and fundamental knowledge of the properties of various metals commonly used in furniture, industrial and interior design, with a focus on the context and history of metals and production methods within Australia.
Hosted in JamFactory's Jewellery and Metal Studio, the session will begin with a tour of the teaching studio and machine room, which provides facilities for production and commissions as well as JamFactory's associate program for creative practitioners, and public short course program.
This professional development program will comprise a tour, informal information session, discussion, hands-on demonstrations and practical application of knowledge through a series of small skills-based exercises in 6 different metals. Students will be guided through a variety of techniques such as folding, hand-hammering, applying patinas and brush-finishing individual samples to take home in a custom-made sample holder.
