Can you tell us a bit about your background?

My journey started studying Interior Architecture at UniSA. Before graduating, I landed my first "industry job" working as a Sales Support at Stylecraft. This role amplified my love for furniture and set in motion a passion for considered, handcrafted design. After graduating in 2016, I joined Hassell as an Interior Designer. Working from both the Adelaide and Melbourne studios, I had the opportunity to work on some incredible projects ranging from the Salisbury Community Hub, NAB 405 Bourke St and the redevelopment of the CAA Higher Courts to name a few.

Whilst living in Melbourne in early 2020 I started working for Technē. Although starting a new job whilst navigating lockdowns wasn’t a normal experience, I was able to distract myself through immersion in some fun projects, such as Tippy Tay, an Italian style restaurant and the upgrade of RACV’s Healesville Club in the Yarra Ranges. Lockdowns eventually got the better of me and mid 2021 I returned to Adelaide to join the incredible team at Das Studio. My time with Das was amazing and I was given the opportunity to work on some amazing projects with wonderful clients.

So, my background is a bit of a mixed bag, but has always stayed true to my love of all things furniture and product!

What was your motivation for making the move to this new role at JamFactory?

Furniture selections can be a large part of an interior fit out, but it’s not often a task you can immerse yourself in 24/7. I became familiar with the jam collection at Melbourne Design Week in 2021 and just remember thinking ‘wow!’, as it’s rare to discover a collection that’s both designed and manufactured within Australia. The collection highlights things that I love and feel passionate about, so when I saw the role pop up I just couldn’t look past it!

The aim for the jam collection is to contribute to growth of the local design ecology. How do you think JamFactory can contribute?

We have a special design community in Adelaide where people are connected and supportive of each other. JamFactory is a beacon for local design and what sets us apart is, in addition to our gallery and retail spaces, we have private studios, teaching spaces and manufacturing facilities, which is pretty special. The multi-disciplinary nature of these spaces means sharing of knowledge and collaborations arise naturally, enabling exciting opportunities and ideas to come to life.

How do you see JamFactory building awareness of the unique capabilities of local designers, makers and manufacturers?

This industry can be very fast paced and extremely demanding, with lots of information flying around, so you want to know who you can trust and who you can rely on when sourcing products and services. One of the unique elements of JamFactory is we are very approachable, our doors are always open and that’s why we’ve set up a beautiful showroom space within the building that designers and their clients can visit. That way when you walk into our space, you see our studios in action, you see the hard work and talent that goes into production. This builds awareness and understanding, telling the unique story of JamFactory.

What do you see as key to creating and maintaining genuine relationships within the sector?

Getting out there and getting to know people is extremely important to me, it sounds simple but I think that showing a genuine interest and offering your time can go a long way. As I’ve already mentioned this industry can be very fast paced so when you’ve met someone face to face, and you know a little bit about them it makes it that much easier to pick up the phone, have a quick chat and get the help you need.
