In May, second year Glass Studio Associate Hamish Donaldson spent three weeks working with Ninuku Arts in the remote Indigenous community of Kalka in the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara Lands (APY Lands). Facilitated by Glass Studio alumnus Mandi King, JamFactory and Ninuku Arts have recently collaborated in the creation of a series of vessels featuring the traditional patterns and motifs of the local Kalka and Pipalyatjara communities. For this project, local artists painted these designs onto small glass vessels with high fire enamel paints, with the artworks sent back to JamFactory to be encased in glass and blown into larger vessels by the Glass Studio.
